Pop culture, music, movies, books and art, not only saved my life as a shy awkward teenager, it was the driving force in making me into the creative 80s crazed muscle animal I am today! Barbarians from the 80s films my dad would rent from the local video store shaped my image of masculinity, while 80s pop singers inspired my hunger to follow my dreams and fantasy books allowed me to escape my life and hide in their adventures instead.
I was 13 when my cousins drew a moustache on my face and dressed me in an over sized suit jacket and took me clubbing for the first time. The song “Straight Up” had just hit the clubs and was playing at every venue we went too. It was back in the day when it was common practice for cubs to have tv screens up on the wall showing the videos to the songs playing and I became obsessed with the song and music video. I remember going back to school and telling everyone about my “Night on the Town” (thats what it was titled in Australia) experience, feeling like the Keith Coogan, and all about this amazing new singer called Paula Abdul.
ROGUE ONE was a complete surprise. After being let down with the new Star Wars, sentiment was the only thing making me want to go see this film but quarter into it I was creaming my nerd jocks AND for once they didn’t fuck up the ending but have one of the most best endings I’ve ever seen.
Detention wasn’t released this year but I discovered this KIKASS film in 2016.
