MATTO LUCAS

By PERFORMANCE ART No Comments

I first met Matto Lucas at the very first Company Of Men Exhibition, but he grabbed my attention with a KICKASS review he did of my performance piece on the opening night of the exhibition. He looked past the sweat and muscle and saw several layered meanings in my show that I assume usually just goes over everyone’s head. I have wanted to collaborate on a project with him ever since. Here’s the awesome pics he took of me and Dingo for a performance we did at the notorious Melbourne party TROUGH (back when).

Shot when I was just a PUPPY FLEX! this was a promo for HOTROD, the infamous Sydney night that was held monthly at the Oxford Hotel where I did many a messy performance! This was the first time I worked with them for their “PUMP UP THE JAM” 90s night where I DJ’ed as well. Yes, I used to DJ. well, press start and stop on my laptop, but i was really knarly at it!

I was inspired by Collette’s Ring My Bell for this shoot.

To celebrate my BIRTHDAY today I thought I’d post up one of my favourite performance pieces up.

I distinctly remember it was around the time that Oxford street started having a heavy police presence and many of the gay bars and clubs were getting raided and or fined. The PoPo weren’t just targeting drugs and alcohol abuse, or I would have been fine, but also nudity, so I was FKED! Nathan Mahon, who ran the night, came into the dresser room before the show and said that the venue management had spoken to him and said that there was to be no nudity in my performance. I asked who gets in trouble, me or the club? Nathan I stared back at him blankly then turned to my reflection in the mirror to settle my wig while proclaiming, “I am not changing my show Freddy!”

As you can see you should never tell me “not” do something!

a MASSIVE FKIN TAHNKU to AARON MANHATTAN not only because he was crazy enough to do a show with me BUT because he was the person who inspired me to take my shows to completely different level than I had been after seeing his HORROR SHOW performance at HOTROD.

He is an amazing man, an astounding artist and a good mate. Wherever U are mate I know something’s about to go down!

And Sam Gatsby Lim for shooting this HOT MESS of a promo vid!

My performance for SIRCUIT’S Birthday 2014.

One of the first venues in Melbourne, Australia to support me  and my career, SIRCUIT and the guys behind it are now like my family. I can’t thank them enough for the artistic freedom they have always allowed and, though they would never admit it, encouraged from me. And the amount of times they have had to clean up a massive mess after one of my shows! Or defend me after I’ve offended someone or pushed the boundaries just a little too far.
